CityGuide DMS - Documentation - Requirements

CityGuide DMS runs using minimal hard- and software-requirements.

All you need for the program execution of CityGuide DMS, is a computer, a browser and a Java version.

Since the system is built on Java technology, it is also independent of the preinstalled operating system and the computer hardware and therefore universally applicable.

The following paragraphs deal with the requirements for running a CityGuide Digital Mapping System on your computer.

Requirements - Hardware

For a flawless operation of CityGuide DMS we encourage to supply the following hardware components as a minimal configuration..

CPU Speed of at least 450 Mhz
256 MB RAM
2 MB Graphics-Memory
CDROM-Drive (optional)
Audio (optional)

These specifications apply to a single given desktop computer. Those components are no longer sufficient for internet or network / server applications.

Questions regarding this matter should be forwarded directly to your provider or system administrator. You may also directly contact us. We are looking forward to assist you.

Requirements - Software

To ensure the best performance of CityGuide DMS we recommend the following software-components as minimum requirements...

Internet-Explorer 5.5, Netscape Navigator 4.7 or
alternatively a Java 1.1-compatible Browser

Java 1.1-Virtual Machine or higher

This minimum configuration is enough to run CityGuide DMS. However, several program functions require an additional Java 2-Virtual Machine:

Program function

Required Java version

Open and save drawings and routes on your local computer

1.4
Enhanced print functions via the "View - Print" menu option 1.4

The required software components can be acquired free of charge from their respective software makers. More information and links on this subject can be found online on our product pages.

Note, that in order to ensure full operation of CityGuide DMS you need to ensure that your browser is correctly installed and "Java" and "Javascript" are activated in the browser's settings.

Should you encounter any problems while running the program, please refer to the chapter on "Problems" in this documentation and contact our online-support if necessary.

Requirements - Enhanced Functions

CityGuide DMS combines Java 1.1-compatibility with the Java 2-security model. Since version 5.5 you have the option to launch CityGuide DMS with enhanced functionality.

Learn more about this right here...

Java 1.1 Compatible Version (Without Certificate)

Microsoft Internet Explorer as well as earlier versions of Netscape (4.x) use a built in Java-VM of the version 1.1. In this case, the application can only be executed in a so called "sandbox", which shows itself in the inability to save user-made routes or drawings to the local file system and the unavailability of the enhanced printing functions.

By additionally installing a new Java2 Plugin, it is possible to enable the enhanced functions on your browser.

A current Java2-VM may be obtained for free through http://java.com.

Java 2 Compatible Version (With Certificate)

The application contains a digital signature and a valid Verisign certificate. This guarantees the user that CityGuide DMS is genuine and has not been altered by third parties since the software has been issued by Webnologic Internet Systems.

This is required, since the application can save drawings and routes to the local file system in order to open them again at a later point in time.

The enhanced functions of CityGuide DMS are based on the Java 2-Security Model and require an appropriate Java 2-Virtual Machine. In case your browser only supports a Java 1.1-Virtual Machine, the certificate is ignored and the application will continue to run with limited functionality.

During application startup, a dialogue window will inform you of the possibility to issue the appropriate rights to the software. It may be neccessary to repeat this step, for example, when a new version of CityGuide DMS is launched on the internet for the first time...

The dialogue window offers you the following options:

  • Run
You grant the necessary rights to the application for one session.

  • Cancel
You disapprove of the enhanced rights. The application will then run in a Java 1.1 compliant mode.

  • Always trust this source
You always grant the enhanced rights to the application.

  • More Information
You will receive detailed information about the digital signature and the certificate in use by the application.

Information on the certificate's valid time frame

The Verisign certificate used in the application is valid for the maximum duration of two years. Up until now it is technically not possible to automatically renew this certificate for Java-products. Certificates that have expired have no impact on program functionality or stability.

After two years have passed, you will be notified about the certificate expiration in the dialogue window for the enhanced program rights as follows...

You may see this message when using earlier versions of CityGuide DMS at the latest one year after you have bought a CDROM-Version or with online versions whose certificate hasn't been updated for a long time.
